Ingredient Breakdown

Chicken Meal

Chicken meal is a high-quality protein that contains as much as 300% more protein than chicken contains alone.

Peas

This is an ingredient that can be found in most holistic dog food brands. They are a source of fiber, carbs, Vitamins A, C and K.

Chicken Fat

Chicken fat is a healthy source of natural fat for dogs. It is packed with Omega 6 fatty acids which can help to support healthy skin and a shiny coat.

Garbanzo Beans

Garbanzo beans can be a source of moderate amounts of protein, potassium, magnesium, copper, Vitamin A, complex B vitamins, lecithin, folate and antioxidants. Garbanzo beans can help provide overall body health support.

Sweet Potato

Sweet potatoes, when used in dog food, can be a source of fiber, Vitamin C, Potassium, Calcium, Iron and Vitamin B6. They are only seen as moderately nutritious.

Yeast Culture

Yeast Culture is a product that is made up of yeast and the media it is grown on. It is an unnecessary feed ingredient that is added. In this sense, it is typically used to help enhance the flavor of the food to make it more appealing to dogs.

Blood Meal

While gross at first, I promise you, blood meal has a purpose. Blood meal, a blood concentrate, can contain up to nearly 300% more protein than can be found in protein. It is typically produced from clean and fresh animal blood. As long as the blood meal is sourced from healthy livestock, it can be added into any pet food. However, keep in mind that blood meal is typically nothing more than a cheap protein booster.

Since Victor pet food sources the blood meal from USDA approved facilities, though it is not stated what type of animal the blood comes from, this is an ingredient I don’t see an issue with. However, it is one that makes me wary.

Menhaden Fish Meal

Menhaden Fish Meal is a high-quality protein source that can contain up to 300% more protein than Menhaden fish contains alone.

Dehydrated Alfalfa Meal

This ingredient is a mixture of vitamins, minerals and digestive enzymes that help support healthy digestion.

Natural Flavor

Natural flavor comes from a combination of sources such as fruits, vegetables or meats. It is typically applied to the outside of the kibble to help enhance the flavor of the food.

Potassium Chloride

This ingredient is added as a potassium supplement and is considered a naturally occurring mineral.

Carrot Powder

Carrot powder is nothing more than exactly what it says: carrots that have been cooked, dried and reduced to powder. This can help provide benefits such as being high in fiber, a source of Vitamin A and help support optimal dental health.

Tomato Pomace

This ingredient comes from a mixture of tomato skins, pulp and crushed tomato seeds. It is a source of Vitamin A, fiber and essential B vitamins.

Taurine

Taurine is an amino acid that can help play a role in producing bile salts, regulating electrolytes and balancing neurotransmitters. Taurine also has benefits such as fighting obesity, improving a dog’s immune system, promoting optimal reproductive health and helping to support healthy vascular function.

Salt

Salt is an ingredient that has no reason being in dog food. While it is typically used to help enhance the flavor of the food, an excess in salt consumption can lead to obesity and heart disease over time.

Victor Grain Free Dog Food Reviews by Actual Pet Parents

The reviews of Victor dog food by actual pet owners have been fairly mixed. Some love it, some hate it. Here are what some pet parents have been saying about Victor Grain free dog food:

I have a dog that suffered from a heart failure scare a few months back. I turned to Victor Dog food because of its use of Taurine. I’m glad I found a good option for my dog. -AC, Amazon customer

Always great food from Victor. While I prefer to feed my dogs the Salmon and Sweet Potato formula, I tend to rotate flavors for my Husky so he doesn’t get bored of the food. It’s great to have optional flavors to choose from. -Relytyelgis, Amazon customer

Not my dog’s favorite food. While I really like this food, my dog is of a different opinion. -Robin Willadsen-Lancien, Amazon customer

I highly recommend this food. It has been a God send for my dog who has a stomach sensitivity. He’s doing really well on this food. -C.M. Lommel, Amazon customer

My Final Opinion

After looking at Victor Grain Free dog food, I’m not going to lie, I have a few issues with it. Sure, on the surface, it seems like a great grain free option that is inexpensive. However, carefully looking at the ingredients, I have a HUGE problem with some of them such as salt, blood meal and the yeast culture.

However, aside from that, it still contains a majority of healthy ingredients, hence why I don’t mind recommending it. ESPECIALLY for those who are on a tight budget and are looking for a cheap option.
