Thanksgiving Dog Treats: Mini Pup Pies Step-by-Step

By the time I came around to make these tasty treats, I had a little experience with grain free icing by this point. Mind you, dog treat icing, while similar to regular icing, works differently when applied to treats. It tends to be slightly runny or slightly thick depending on how much water you apply to it. This can make it hard to apply to treats in exactly the designs you wish.

For these treats, I knew what I wanted the end result to look like: 3 miniature versions of classic Thanksgiving pies. While I have zero experience designing icing into intricate patterns on cookies or treats, I had a basic knowledge of how to use a pastry bag with a fitted tip. With that in mind, I had to go ahead and just give it a go

What Do You Need?

This is a recipe that requires a two step process: preparing the base and then preparing the icing. For the base you are going to need:

For the icing, I used:

  • 4, ¼ cup portions of Pastries4Pets grain free icing (or this icing)
  • ¼ cup of pastries4pets carob icing (or this icing)
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons of warm water

The Process

Once you have everything needed, the first step is to prepare the base. This is the base I used for a variety of different recipes I have already made on this site such as my Homemade Harry Potter treats and my Easy Homemade Dog Treat recipe. It is a simple grain free base that comes together in minutes. Just take a bowl and mix together the chickpea or garbanzo flour, egg, mashed banana and organic peanut butter until evenly mixed. Keep in mind, the dough tends to be on the crumbly side at first. Once you transfer it to a heavily floured surface and begin kneading it, while adding 1/8 cup of additional chickpea flour at a time, I promise the dough will slowly come together. Keep in mind, the dough will still be slightly sticky. But as you continue to knead the dough and even begin rolling it out, continue to add additional flour.

Roll out the dough until ¼ inch in thickness. Then use a 3 to 4 inch circular cookie cutter to cut out circles from the dough. If you don’t have a cookie cutter, use the top side of a large drinking glass instead. Depending on how many pup pies you want to make, this dough traditionally yield 4 to 6 dough circles. Transfer the dough circles onto a baking sheet lined with a sheet of parchment paper.

Place into the oven to bake for 25 minutes or until golden brown at 350 degrees. When using parchment paper in the oven, don’t become too concerned if you see a bit of smoke. This is normal, but I promise it will pass. Once baked, remove from the oven and set the circles aside to cool completely.

As the biscuits are cooling, this is the time to prepare the icing. This is the tricky part, especially if you are using Pastries4pets grain free icing. When preparing the icing, you need to keep in mind that you are going to have to prepare the specific colors ahead of time. For the “crust” I ended up using the Pastries4pets dog safe food coloring by combining the gold color and adding a bit of white to lighten it up. In separate bowls, combine the remaining icing mix, water and individual colors of red, brown and orange.

Once the biscuits are cooled completely, begin frosting the top of the biscuits with the colors of the pies. For my own pies, I used red, orange and brown for cherry, pumpkin and chocolate pie. Then I set the pies aside to rest for about an hour or until the frosting harden slightly. When frosting the top layers, make sure to leave a slight rim around the edges for piping the “crusts.”

Once the crust icing has been prepared, transfer it into a piping bag with a thin tip. Pipe the icing around edges the biscuits in whatever pattern you wish. Use your creativity here. Once the “crust” has been decorated, set the biscuits aside to rest for 1 hour or until the icing hardens.

Then you are ready to serve to your pups!
