Ingredient Breakdown

Menhaden Fish Meal

This is a high-quality protein source that contains as much as 300% more protein than Menhaden Fish contains alone.

Brown Rice

This is a healthy grain source that is high in fiber, magnesium, and selenium. These nutrients can help support healthy energy levels and help to support a healthy heart.

Rice Flour

This is a low-quality grain by-product that derives from rice bran or rice gluten. It is a low-quality source of carbohydrates and is not considered to be nutritious.

Rice Bran

This ingredient, while functional for dogs, is a grain that has been proven to be harmful in the long-term. This ingredient contains a high rancidity rate, meaning this food has a higher chance of going bad the longer it is in storage.

Chicken Fat

This is a high-quality fat source that is used. It is a great source of energy and can also help to support a shiny coat.

Dried Beet Pulp

This is a known source of fiber that can help to support healthy digestive health. However, it is refined processed sugar, meaning it holds virtually no nutritional value for dogs.

This ingredient is high in fiber and Omega 6 fatty acids. It can help promote healthy digestion, healthy skin and a shiny coat.

Dried Egg Product

This ingredient derives from an egg hatchery and is dehydrated prior to use. It is full of protein and is considered moderately nutritious.

This ingredient is typically added into pet food to enhance the palatability of the food.

SPORTMiX Wholesomes Dog Food Reviews by Pet Owners

Most of the SPORTMiX Wholesomes dog food reviews left by actual pet owners tend to be pretty mixed. Take a look below at what some pet parents have been saying about this brand below.

Excellent quality food for an even better price. I found this food by chance and have never needed to look back. Both of my dogs now have increased energy, improved and shiny coats and absolutely love it. My dogs are healthier because of this food. -Brittany B.

This is a decent food for the price you pay. I purchased this food because my dog would throw up everything else she ate. This was the only food that she could keep down. The price of it is pretty good compared to others out there. I’m not going to complain about it. -Koko

My dog absolutely loves this food. I just adopted a Beagle from the ASPCA and she has a sensitive stomach. I tried this food with her, and she hasn’t had any problems so far. Apart from how much it costs, I’m glad by the progress my girl has made on this food. -AK

Just try the food for yourself. Not only will you find the price to be justified just by what is in the food, but I swear your dog won’t have any issues with it. -Forrest Russell

My dog tends to be a picky animal, but even he didn’t turn his nose up at this food. At first I was nervous to try a new food on my dog because of him being notoriously picky. But after trying it once, I realized I had no reason to worry. He loves it. On top of that, he no longer has any hot spots or itchy paws. It’s a great food! -Samantha

My Final Opinion

After carefully looking at SPORTMiX Wholesomes dog food, this is a food I don’t mind recommending. HOWEVER, I will say this is one of the lowest quality holistic foods you can buy. There are just too many unhealthy and questionable ingredients listed on the label for me to outright praise it. But, what I will say is that the food is a great introduction to holistic foods.

For the price, it isn’t a bad food to try with your dog, but there are much healthier and better alternatives out there.

Final Verdict:
Recommended, but better options out there!

I have been feeding the Fishmeal Wholesomes for about 5 years to my Staffordshire. It works very well for him, he has allergies to everything, and this has been the best dogfood for him.

Before covid 19 began, I stopped in my local pet shop to look for a bulk sized bag of food to hold my dogs over until we found out more about what was happening. I had mentioned my pups were previously eating Purina 1 but A, I wanted something a little better for the bellies and 2, I wanted it to last us atleast 2 weeks. That’s when the store owner recommended Wholesomes. There was one bag left and I thought I had scored and figured people really sought out this food. My younger guy who is about a year and half adjusted greatly, he has already had some issues with loose poops so I was very happy with the results. But as weeks went on, we began to notice our older lady was eating less and less. We brought her to the vet , did some tests and everything appeared okay or came back negative. Towards the end of April, she began vomiting . Very small amounts but , was vomiting. A lot. We took her back to the vet for xrays and more blood work. No answers, all inconclusive.. except for the blood work. Very high white blood cell count. She began having diarrhea, very bloody and messy diarrhea. We went back to the vet but to an emergency clinic where she was given an ultra sound . We were told there was too much fluid within her intestines and stomach too see anything going on. So they ordered a surgery to open her up take biopsy’s . She’s 5.5 and was a completely healthy and happy girl. They had asked me about the food I switched her to and the “sigh” I heard on the line was gut punching. Since April, we’ve spent $2,000 at the vet and have NO answers. They ordered a surgery that will cost $7400 JUST to gather biopsy’s. I’m reaching out to possibly hear back from anyone who might have experienced something similar or might have an idea of what the h*%# is going on .
    Thank you

While I personally don’t like many of the ingredients in this food, I have heard plenty of stories from other dog owners regarding it. All positive stories, mind you. If your dogs love it and they do well on it, I won’t criticize you for it. You know your dogs better than I do.

      Thanks for the comment!

We have two ridgebacks who have very sensitive digestive systems. We have always fed premium foods. Fromm was too rich for them. We were feeding a prescription diet at about $90 per 30 lbs and it was killing us. I looked for a food with an ingredient profile v. similar to the script food. This one came up (wholesome chicken) and we gave it a try. That was 3 years ago and my dogs have had very few episodes of diarrhea – have had great coat etc. I kind of felt like I was feeding them doggie Twinkies but then this works for them and the price is a boon!

      Thank you for your feedback!

I understand too what a rich diet can do to a dog. My own dogs can’t have any brands that are “too rich” or “too healthy.” Their systems just can’t cope with it. If I have learned anything, and also from your comment, we pet owners should always listen to our dogs and their bodies. What we may think may be best for them, may actually not work well for them.

      Thank you for the comment!
