Ingredient Breakdown

Chicken Meal

This is a high-quality protein ingredient that can contain as much as 300% more protein than chicken contains alone.

Corn

This plant-based ingredient is used as a cheap source of carbohydrates. The issue with this ingredient is that it is not easily digestible by cats, especially if it hasn’t been processed.

Brewer’s Rice

This ingredient comes from small fragments of rice kernels that are separated from larger kernels that have been milled. This is a low-quality ingredient and a low-cost filler that is typically found in lower quality pet foods.

Corn Gluten Meal

This ingredient comes from processed corn. It is typically used as a source of additional protein, only used to boost the protein content on the label. It is found in many low-quality pet food brands.

Wheat

This ingredient is used as a source of carbohydrates for energy and an additional source of protein, especially when used with the first ingredient of this food.

Chicken Fat

This is a healthy source of fat that contains essential Omega 3 fatty acids, additional protein and delicious flavor cats love.

Wheat Gluten

This ingredient is used as a source of protein. It is typically used to complement meat protein profiles in pet food brands for nutritional precision. It can be found in many vets recommended exclusive diets.

Natural Flavors

This ingredient is used as a flavor enhancer. It is made from a blend of meat, fruit, and vegetable sources.

Brown Rice

This ingredient is used as a healthy and nutritious source of carbohydrates. It also has a low glycemic index.

Grain Distillers Dried Yeast

This ingredient is an inactive spray dried yeast typically applied to pet foods to increase its palatability.

Sodium Silico Aluminate

This ingredient is used as an anti-caking agent.

Fish Oil

Royal Canin Cat Food Reviews by Actual Cat Owners

Most of the Royal Canin cat food reviews you will find posted online by actual cat owners tend to be more on the positive side. However, there are a few complaints out there regarding recent formula changes. Despite that, there is no denying that most cat owners are thrilled with this brand. Let’s take a closer look at what some cat owners have been saying about this brand.

“This is great stuff. I was recommended to feed this to a cat I recently adopted and he loves this stuff. It is affordable and there are plenty of options to choose from. I highly recommend it.” -NinaB, March 10th

“This food has given me the healthiest cats I have ever had. After switching my own cat and my roommate’s cats onto this brand, all three of them have developed the softest coats I have ever seen. On top of that, they have the energy of kittens.” -Luciddreamer, September 26th

“If you want healthier cats, put them on this food! Our vet recommended this food and we are glad we listened. Our cats have the most energy they have ever had and they are barely hacking up hairballs anymore.” -Gramaejue, August 24th

“What can I say? This is a great cat food product! My indoor cats absolutely love this food and they are the pickiest eaters I have ever owned. Try it if your cat refuses to eat anything else.” -Nvr2amzd, January 11th

“Is this a miracle food? Oh, yes it is! I own a 17 year old cat with glaucoma, arthritis and renal failure. However, after switching him to this brand my cat no longer needs drops for his glaucoma, his urine output has reduced and he no longer needs supplements for his arthritis.” -L.A.H., April 15th

Royal Canin Cat Food: The Bottomline

At first glance, Royal Canin cat food may seem like the best brand out there. How could it not? It is one of the few brands out there that makes brand-specific formulas after all. However, after carefully looking at the ingredients, comparing different breed-specific formulas against each other and taking into consideration what cat owners have been saying about this food, this food isn’t all that it is cracked up to be. Sure, the breed-specific formulas may seem appealing, but with the low-quality ingredients most of the formulas use, this is not a brand that will benefit any breed of cat in the long run.

It is made with too many corn ingredients, low-quality and filler ingredients to really be nutritionally beneficial. While it does have many formula options out there and some cats even seem to like it, it is not a brand I can in good conscience recommend to other cat owners.

Final Verdict:
Not Recommended
