Ingredient Breakdown

Chicken By-Product Meal

This is an ingredient that is used as the primary protein source. It is made from the clean and rendered pieces of chicken carcasses which can include the bones, offal, and underdeveloped eggs.

Ground Yellow Corn

This ingredient is used as a source of carbs and additional protein. The problem with this ingredient is that corn is not highly digestible by cats.

Corn Gluten Meal

This ingredient is used as an inexpensive protein source. It is a by-product of corn that has been processed.

Whole Grain Wheat

This ingredient is used as a source of fiber and grains, which can help support digestive health.

This ingredient is a common ingredient in pet foods. It is a source of carbohydrates and dietary fiber.

Soy Flour

This ingredient is a processed starch ingredient that is used as an additional source of protein. It has little to no nutritional value for cats.

Beef Fat

This ingredient is a source of fat that is used as an additional source of protein and as a flavor enhancer.

This is a high-quality protein source. Keep in mind after the cooking process, the amount of chicken is reduced by half.

Fish Meal

This is a quality protein source that can contain as much as 300% more protein than fish contains alone. The issue with this ingredient is that you aren’t told what fish this ingredient is sourced from.

Liver Flavor

Just as the name implies, this ingredient is used as a flavor enhancer.

Phosphoric Acid

This ingredient is used as a food acidifier.

Calcium Carbonate

This ingredient is used as a leavening agent which can help give the kibble in this food texture.

This ingredient is used to help normal body cells function. Keep in mind, too much salt can lead to obesity and heart disease in cats.

Potassium Chloride

This ingredient is used as a potassium supplement.

Choline Chloride

This ingredient is used as a source of Vitamin B4.

Purina Cat Chow: The Bottomline

After taking a closer look at Purina Cat Chow by taking a closer look at its ingredients, taking into account its affordability and looking at what cat owners have been saying about this food, this isn’t a food I can honestly recommend. For starters, it contains way too many corn ingredients to be truly beneficial to cats. It is also loaded with too many low-quality ingredients that can end up harming cats rather than helping them. To be honest, there are much better alternatives out there and all for a much more affordable price.
