Are Pumpkin Seeds Safe for Cats?

In short: yes, pumpkin seeds can be safe for cats. In fact, cats can eat pumpkin seeds as well as they can eat other treats. Pumpkin seeds can be a highly beneficial treat filled with a multitude of vitamins and nutrients cats actually need.

Pumpkin Seed Nutrition: What’s In It?

While pumpkin seeds can be highly beneficial for cats, it is important not to overfeed them to your feline. This is especially true with the number of nutrients loaded within them. Some of the vitamins and minerals contained within pumpkin seeds include:

  • Iron
  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin K
  • Vitamin B6
  • Potassium
  • Magnesium
  • Beta-Carotene
  • Calcium
  • Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids
  • Natural antioxidants
  • Zinc
  • Copper
  • Dietary Fiber
  • Manganese

All of these nutrients can help with everything from supporting healthy digestion, helping to form red blood cells, helping to promote skin health to even to support optimal cardiac health.

Surprising Benefits of Pumpkin Seeds

1. Pumpkin Seeds for Digestion

Pumpkin seeds are incredibly high in fiber. Fiber-rich foods can help relieve constipation or even ease diarrhea. As natural carnivores, cats never seem to get enough fiber in their diet. Because of this cats have issues flushing out their systems completely, cleansing their bowels. By adding a few crushed pumpkin seeds into their food regularly, it can help support healthy digestion and regular bowel movements.

2. Pumpkin Seeds for Parasites

While it may be a myth that pumpkin seeds can help get rid of parasites in cats, there is some scientific basis to it. Pumpkin seeds naturally contain a component known as Cucurbaticin, which is toted in the veterinary community as a natural way to fight intestinal parasites. Of course, never use pumpkin seeds alone to treat parasites. Always be sure to consult your veterinarian if you have seen worms in your cat’s stool.

3. Pumpkin Seeds for Weight Loss

If you have an overweight cat that could benefit from losing a few extra pounds, adding crushed pumpkin seeds to their food can help go a long way in helping them achieve safe weight loss. Pumpkin seeds are low in calories and rich in dietary fiber. This can help cats feel fuller for long periods of time while supporting regular bowel movements.

4. Hair Loss

With the essential Omega 3 fatty acids and antioxidants contained within pumpkin seeds, this can go a long way in supporting optimal skin and coat health. This can help reduce alopecia in cats and can even help to moisturize sensitive skin.

Best Pumpkin Seeds to Feed to Your Cat

Just as with pumpkin for cats, not all pumpkin seeds should be treated equally. The only type of seeds you should feed to cats should be fresh, raw and cleaned seeds. When feeding seeds, it is best you crush them into a fine powder and then mix it directly into their food.

Be sure to avoid feeding pumpkin seeds that contain salt or unnecessary spices. I highly recommend sticking with these kinds of pumpkin seeds if you have any doubts.

The Bottomline

It is no secret that pumpkin seeds can be a tasty snack for cats. They can even be highly beneficial compared to other supplements. Don’t be afraid to try pumpkin seeds with your own cat if you want to give them a nutritional boost from time to time.

what is the country of origin of the Terrasoul organic pumpkin seeds?

It seems these seeds are imported from China. Though the company extensively tests and 3rd party tests all of their products for heavy metals. They also do pesticide residue testing on their pumpkin seeds and also validate the organic status of their suppliers.

I hope that answers your question.
