Homemade Pumpkin Dog Treats: Step-by-Step

I found this recipe thanks to a dog treat company that specializes in dog treat molds known as Le Dogue. I had purchased one of their rubber treat molds when I decided to take this blog into a new direction aside from just looking at the ingredients of dog foods. Upon arrival, the treat molds came with a small booklet of recipes to try. So, what was the first thing I did with these molds? Of course, I tried one of the recipes for myself.

Keep in mind, most of the recipes listed throughout this booklet tend to list ingredients that I personally don’t consider to be too healthy, even if they are used for treats. I tweaked the recipe to make it grain free so pet parents didn’t have to feel guilty about giving these treats to their own pups. It is made with healthy and nutritional ingredients that are so easy to find and incredibly easy to prepare, I guarantee that you will want to make these treats as often as possible.

What Do You Need?

Since this is one of the easiest treat recipes you can prepare, you really don’t need much. All you need is:

The Process

Most of these ingredients can be found in your local grocery store. For the rubber treat molds, you can find them at any Petco or PetSmart or online at retailers such as eBay or Amazon. To use the exact molds I use, check these out.

Making the treat batter is easy, but keep in mind it tends to come out moist. Just use a bowl and add in the chickpea or garbanzo flour, egg, ground cinnamon, coconut flour and pureed pumpkin. You will want to stir the mix until smooth in consistency.

Once mixed, it is time to transfer it into the molds. While you can scoop a bit of the batter in your hands and then press it into the molds, what worked best for me and what helped to turn out uniform treats, I used a rubber spatula and spread the batter in a thick layer into the molds in one fell swoop. However, do whatever is easier for you.

Place the treat molds onto the baking sheet and then baked for 30 minutes at 350 degrees. Reduce the temperature of the oven to 250 degrees and continue to bake the treats for 20 minutes. This is when you want to keep a watchful eye on the treats as they tend to brown quickly. I ended up removing my treats at about 15 minutes once they began to darken around the edges.

Once browned, turn off the oven and allow the treats to cool completely in the oven. This is when they will harden and removing them from the molds will be easier. Remove them and serve them up. Make sure to store the treats in an air tight treat container for no more than 3 days as this is when they start to go bad.
