Pros

  • Affordable price

Cons

  • Ground yellow corn is the first ingredient
  • Contains too many low-quality ingredients
  • Mixed cat owner reviews

Friskies dry cat food is another brand of cat food I am familiar with. When things got tough in my home growing up, this was another one of the cat food brands my mother and father would get for our 3 housecats to hold them over until they could get something better. I even have had personal experience with this food when I volunteered for a small feral cat rescue in Colorado while I was attending vet tech school. I have literally had experience with every formula of Friskies available.

However, as readily available and affordable this brand is, how does it stack against competitor brands? Is it just as healthy? Or is it all crap?

We’ll find out in my honest Friskies cat food review!

For this review, I will be focusing on the Indoor Delights formula.

Ingredient Breakdown

Ground Yellow Corn

This ingredient is used not only as a protein source in this food but a carbohydrate source as well. This is an ingredient that is not highly digestible.

Corn Gluten Meal

This is an ingredient that is the by-product of processed corn. It is typically used as an inexpensive source of protein and as a binder in this food.

Chicken By-Product Meal

This ingredient is a source of protein. It is made using the clean and rendered parts of chicken carcasses and grinding it for use. This can include the bones, underdeveloped eggs, and offal of the chicken.

Soybean Meal

This is a plant-based ingredient that is typically used as an additional source of protein. It is seen to have little to no nutritional value for cats.

Beef Tallow

This ingredient is used as a fat source to help enhance the flavor of the food. It contains additional protein as well as Omega 3 fatty acids.

Powdered Cellulose

This is an ingredient that is used as an insoluble source of fiber, which can contribute to regular stool passings.

Soybean Hulls

This is an ingredient that is used as an inexpensive filler. It is typically used to add bulk to pet food.

Liver Flavor

Just as the name implies, this ingredient is used as a flavoring agent to entice cats to eat it.

Meat and Bone Meal

This ingredient is typically found in many low-quality pet food brands. It contains as much as 50% protein, 35% ash, 12% fat, and 7% water. The issue with this ingredient is that you aren’t exclusively told what animal this ingredient derives from.

Calcium Carbonate

This ingredient is typically used as a leavening agent to give the kibble in this food texture. It is also used as an added calcium supplement.

Phosphoric Acid

This ingredient is typically used as an acidifier as well as a flavoring agent.

Salmon Meal

This is a high-quality protein source that can contain as much as 300% more protein than salmon contains alone. It is also a source of Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids which can help support healthy skin and a shiny coat.

Salt

This is an ingredient that is necessary for the normal function of cells. However, too much salt can lead to obesity and heart disease in cats.

Natural Flavor

Just as the name implies, this is an ingredient that is used as a flavoring agent. It can contain added protein. It is derived from meat, fruit, and vegetable sources.

Choline Chloride

This is an ingredient that is used as a Vitamin B4 supplement.

Dried Cheese Powder

This ingredient is typically used as an added treat ingredient for cats to help enhance the flavor of the food.

Parsley Flakes

This ingredient is used to help freshen breath as well as be a source of natural antioxidants.

Friskies Dry Cat Food Reviews by Cat Owners

Most of the Friskies cat food reviews you will find from actual cat owners tend to be pretty mixed. Some will vary based on how their own cats react to the food to whether or not the food made their cat sick. Let’s take a closer look at what some of these cat owners have been saying about this food.

“This food comes at a convenient price, but my cats aren’t fans of it. I own 6 cats and only one of them would eat this food. The food itself seems fine and I trust Purina. Just wish my cats weren’t so picky.” -Bugs, October 24th

“I’m not sure why I haven’t tried this food right away. My cats love this stuff and they haven’t thrown up since switching to it. I’m glad I found it. They love it.” -Ellen Horvath, Juky 27th

“It is easily digestible and my cats love it. I run a small Feral Cat rescue and we go through a lot of this food. This is a great formula and loved by many of the felines we look after. I highly recommend it.” -PeggySue Collins, December 4th

“Excellent cat food. This is perhaps the best tasting dry cat food that my cats love. The price is great and saves a ton of money.” -Anthony, December 6th

“I have to weigh convenience vs the cost with this food. Sure, I am saving money on this food, but I am paying extra in terms of convenience for it. I know the ingredients in this stuff aren’t the best, but the price is, so that is worth it in my opinion.” -Dr. Sean Henry, September 11th

Friskies Cat Food: The Bottomline

After carefully looking at what is in a bag of Friskies dry cat food and taking into account what some cat owners are saying about this food, this isn’t a brand I would recommend to anyone. It is literally loaded with all of the crappy ingredients cats naturally love but contains none of the ingredients cats actually need. Sure, the price is convenient for most cat owners, but I promise you the money you save on this food, you will end up having to pay later in terms of vet visits. There are MUCH better options out there. Only go with this food if you don’t have any alternative.
