Ingredient Breakdown

1. Salmon

Salmon is a high-quality ingredient used in most holistic pet foods. Salmon contains not only protein, but also contains omega 3 and 6 fatty acids which can contribute to a shiny coat and healthy skin.

2. Fish Meal

Fish meal is a protein source that can contain up to 300% more protein. This ingredient is flagged in red because we aren’t told exactly what type of fish the meal comes from.

3. Potatoes

Potatoes are a starch source that contains a moderate rating on the glycemic index. Potatoes are also an affordable complex carbohydrate source.

4. Lentils

Lentils are an excellent source of protein, iron, fiber and zinc. They can help keep a dogs digestive system regular. Lentils are also packed with omega 3 and 6 fatty acids which can lead to a shiny coat and healthy skin.

5. Peas

Peas are a legume that contain levels of protein, fiber and important micronutrients that dogs need. Peas can also be a great source of Vitamin B, potassium and Phosphorous.

6. Pea Flour

Pea flour is a powder that comes from roasted peas. While in small amounts pea flour can be nutritious, in higher amounts it can have the opposite effect. Pea flour is rich in iron, fiber and calcium and can keep a dog’s digestive system healthy.

7. Fava Beans

This is a highly controversial ingredient that is starting to pop up in many holistic dog foods. According to PetFoodIndustry.com when reporting on a recent experiment conducted on dogs who handled fava beans in their digestive system,

Fava beans were well tolerated on all levels that were tested. Only fava beans that were digested on higher levels influenced dogs.

While this may indicate that fava beans had no effect on a dog’s digestive system, according to Rover.com, fava beans contain a compound known as PHA or Phytohemagglutinin, which has been known to be toxic to dogs when consumed at higher levels and can cause vomiting or diarrhea.

Personally, I have never had experience feeding my dogs any food that contains fava beans. From the research I conducted, while fava beans could be beneficial for dogs at lower levels, if a food contains high levels of fava beans, it can prove toxic. Knowing this, I would personally use caution and avoid foods that contain this ingredient.

8. Canola Oil

Canola oil, while heart healthy for humans, can have a different effect on dogs. While it is true that this can be a source of Omega 6 acids, which can lead to a shiny coat for dogs, there are healthy oil alternatives out there.

9. Dried Yeast

This is another controversial ingredient found in many holistic pet foods today. While dried yeast can be a protein source that is rich in important B vitamins and amino acids, many critics argue that this ingredient is linked to food allergies.

10. Flaxseed

Flaxseed is an ingredient that is rich in fiber and is packed with omega acids which can promote a shiny coat and healthy skin.

11. Tomato Pomace

Tomato Pomace comes from a dried mixture of tomato skins, tomato pulp and crushed tomato seeds, which is a healthy source of B vitamins and Vitamin A. It also contains fiber which can contribute to firmer stools.

12. Natural Flavor

This is yet another controversial ingredient that is found in many holistic pet foods. The reason that it is considered controversial is because it is not indicated where the flavor actually comes from. Know that natural flavor comes from various meat, vegetable and fruit sources that helps to enhance the flavor of the food itself.

13. Salt

Salt has no business being in any type of dog food. The primary reason salt is used is to enhance the flavor of the kibble to entice dogs to eat it. Salt is a known contributor to heart disease and obesity in dogs.

A great brand with high quality ingredients. My dog is a very picky eater, especially when it comes to healthy foods, but he loves this food. I have tried many other dog foods, but my dog doesn’t react to them the same way he does this one. -Daviel

I wish I had found this food years ago. I own two dogs that have crazy allergies. But just 4 weeks after feeding them this food, they haven’t scratched once. This food could have saved me a headache years ago when my dogs were first diagnosed with food allergies-Kelly Smith

My dogs love this food! Both of my dogs have shiny coats and they don’t scratch as much as they used to when I fed them other brands. -Angie

My dog was suffering terribly from his skin allergies before I began to feed him this food. It has been such a relief finding a food that doesn’t bother him. -Amazon Customer

This is a great food that I can’t recommend enough. My dogs are very picky but when I found this food, they get so excited. I love this food. -Jessica

Diamond Naturals Recall

Diamond Naturals has a solid history of being safe for dogs. The last known history of a recall is back in March 2013 when the FDA recalled 6 pound bags of Diamond Natural Kitten formula for containing low levels of thiamine.

My Final Opinion

After carefully looking at the ingredients of Diamond Naturals and taking into consideration its price, I don’t mind recommending the food, but I do caution pet parents regarding certain ingredients, especially the fava beans. Anything that has the potential to harm dogs if fed in large amounts is always a risk. So, take that in mind when considering this food. However, based on its price and use of mostly healthy ingredients, this food can prove to be very beneficial for your dog.

Final Verdict:

thumbs up
