Ingredient Breakdown

Deboned Salmon

This is an ingredient that is considered to be an excellent source of protein. It is also a source of Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids which can help support a healthy digestive system, a healthy coat and healthy skin.

This carbohydrate source is loaded with an Omega 6 fatty acid known as linoleic acid, which can help promote healthy skin. It is also considered a source of soluble fiber to promote regular bowel movements and help regulate blood glucose levels.

Brown Rice

This is a source of carbohydrates that is easily digestible. It is loaded with essential nutrients to help regulate your dog’s digestive system.

Salmon Meal

This is a source of protein that can contain as much as 300% more protein than salmon contains by itself.

This is an ingredient rich in phytic acid and lectins. Lectins bind to proteins, which then bind to leptin receptors and regulate carbohydrates into glucose. These lectins can also attach to the villi within the digestive system which can block the absorption of some nutrients. This plant-based protein also contains carbohydrates, digestible fiber, Vitamin K and Manganese.

However, keep in mind with the latest findings from the FDA regarding peas and legumes, this is an ingredient I have to flag just in case. You can check out the FDA’s report regarding the link between legumes and heart disease in dogs by clicking here.

This ingredient is high in digestibility and can help support essential energy levels. Potatoes are loaded with essential nutrients such as Potassium, which is essential for maintaining normal blood pressure levels and complex carbohydrates.

Pea Fiber

This ingredient is an insoluble fiber. It is low in fat and contains as much as 35% to 40% crude fiber.  While it is considered to be a vegetable protein, it does not contain the same amount of protein animal protein contains. It is also high in lysine.

Canola Oil

This ingredient can be very beneficial to dogs. It contains Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids which can help promote healthy blood circulation, alleviate tender joints and help to promote a healthy immune system.

Natural Flavor

According to The Association of American Feed Control Officials or AAFCO defines this ingredient as:

“materials treated with heat, enzymes and/or acids to form concentrated natural flavors.”

To put it simply, natural flavors are a combination of flavors deriving from meat, vegetable and fruit sources which are applied to the outside of kibble in order to enhance the flavor.

Pea Protein

This ingredient is rich in amino acids such as tryptophan, valine, and methionine. While it is a source of essential vitamins, minerals and fiber dogs need, because of peas already showing up on this label, this ingredient is considered nothing more than filler at this point.

Dicalcium Phosphate

This ingredient is nothing more than a supplement containing calcium and phosphorus. It is an ingredient a dog naturally needs.

Calcium Carbonate

This ingredient is a mineral ingredient. It is a natural source of calcium, which can help to promote healthy dental health, support healthy joints and support normal muscle function.

Fish Oil

This ingredient is rich in omega 3 fatty acids which can help promote healthy digestion, healthy skin and a shiny coat.

Potassium Chloride

This is another mineral supplement that can be found in many commercial pet foods. It is a natural source of potassium, which can help promote healthy cardiac function.

There are many benefits to pumpkin in dog food. It is a source of digestible fiber that can help promote regular bowel movements as well as help alleviate constipation or diarrhea. Learn more about the benefits of feeding your dog pumpkin by clicking here.

Dried Chicory Root

This ingredient is an effective probiotic. It contains as much as 20% inulin, helping it to act as a source of soluble fiber which can help keep stool consistent.

Dehydrated Alfalfa Meal

This natural plant protein contains as much as 18% additional protein and as much as 25% digestible fiber.

“This food is easy on digestion. I’ve had great success with Blue Buffalo basics to keep my dogs healthier without having to take constant trips to the vet office. I love it!” -d8agrl

The Bottomline

After carefully looking at Blue Buffalo Basics dog food by looking closely at its ingredients, taking its price into consideration and looking into what other pet owners have been saying about this food, I don’t have a problem recommending it. However, even with my recommendation, since this food features the use of peas, I would be wary of feeding it to dogs, especially after the FDA’s findings on grain-free diets and their link to heart disease.

Regardless, it is a high-quality dog food brand that WILL help dogs who suffer from food allergies.
